  • RE: How to Interpret ACS 5-Year Estimates

    Jeramiah Jordan
    Jeramiah Jordan

My interpretation of the literature provided is they don't take the average of monthly percents for single year or multiyear estimates, nor do they take the average of yearly percents for multiyear estimates. Doing so would give a different (and incorrect…

    Ian L.
    Ian L.

Thanks, Cliff. Based on your note about  ACS dollars being adjusted to the last month in the period, I looked into this a bit more to see how multi-year estimates are created. I found this Census resource (page 22) which explains how multiyear estimates…

    Taylor,

I think you're referring to geog units of the home addresses of ACS respondents?  The ACS Design and Methodology report has only 1 sentence that I could find: "The first step is to update the current residence geography for 2016-2020 data to…

Have you seen this? The PDFs show some of the differences in derived 3-year vs published 3-year, which might account for your population count being off by 1%.

There are the following statements in the document https://www.census.gov/content/dam/Census/library/publications/2018/acs/acs_general_handbook_2018.pdf:

"TIP: As shown in Figure 3.1, consecutive 5-year estimates

  • Do weighting area population thresholds impact estimate reliability/stability?

    Taylor Lampe
    Taylor Lampe

We're trying to better understand estimate reliability/stability for 5-year estimates for sub-county geographies (i.e. places, county subdivisions, and tracts). We noticed that the ACS weighting methodology has minimum population thresholds for the weighting…

Old thread but placing here in case others stumble across it like i did. The census has a very good section with several examples of the pitfalls for aggregating MOE. See pg 25 in American Community Survey Multiyear Accuracy of the Data (5-year 2012-2016…

    Hi Lisa -

There is also a more focused webinar by Alicia VanOrman of PRB, Nate Ramsey of US Dept of Education, and Dave Hubble... That webinar left me feeling more confident in options for aggregating multiple years of data:
