  • RE: Trying to Calculate Population density Across All Places

    Andrew Beveridge
    Andrew Beveridge

Final comment, if the area is updated you could use the newly released Tiger Line files for those that changed.  They have a vintage as do the population estimates.  Hope this is confusing enough:)

One further point, if you want to link business data from…

Yes, we’re planning to organize a hybrid conference in Washington DC in May or June 2025. We haven’t selected a date yet, but we’ll share that information with ACS Data Users Group members soon. Presenters and attendees in previous ACS Conferences have…

    Dear Jill,

You need to use PUMS variables ESR and COW in combination as follows:

Note the universe for S2408 is the Employed Civilian population 16 years old and over

    # ESR: Employment status recode
    # b [0].N/A (less than 16 years old)

    Hi Jeremy,

If you are still looking for assistance, I'd recommend reaching out to adep.annual.business.survey@census.gov - this is the email for the team that handles the Annual Business Survey. They should be able to walk you through the results.

  • RE: LODES 2022 data - A Significant Increase in the Number of Jobs in One Census Block

Thank you so much for this insight! It does seem less likely to be an accurate reflection of the number of jobs in these NAICS sectors given how big of a jump it is within a single block in only one year, unless there are multiple different businesses…

A little background on other surveys. Just to comment on BEA and BLS stats. None of their surveys have anything close to the coverage of the ACS data.  Often the BLS (bureau of labor statistics) and the BEA (bureau of economic analysis) use the ACS data…

  • RE: How to deal with negative income data in PUMS data

    David Dorer

    Check the PUMS data dictionary

    www2.census.gov/.../PUMS_Data_Dictionary_2021.pdf

Negative numbers indicate that the household had a loss.  While there a a lot of ways this can happen, if you owned stock which you sold for a loss and hand no other income…

Thanks again Jonathan. One other factor with IPUMS, isn't its use restricted to governmental bodies and nonprofit organizations (and not available to businesses and nonaffiliated researchers)? As you know Census data is available to all.

If your aim is to get ZIP code data, you won't find it in the ACS.

You could try ZIP Code Business Patterns (which uses actual ZIP codes, not ZCTAs), but I don't know if that will include all of the SES data you need:

I'm trying to find Census data on the current talent pool including demographics and field of study. I have been able to find educational attainment and demographic data using the American Community Survey estimates, but I was wondering if anyone knew…
