Also for business stats you might look at County/Zip Code Business Patterns, lots of munginess from non disclosure so read up, but you generally get # businesses by type, employees and payroll www.census.gov/.../cbp.html

Final comment, if the area is updated you could use the newly released Tiger Line files for those that changed.  They have a vintage as do the population estimates.  Hope this is confusing enough:)

Thanks again Jonathan. One other factor with IPUMS, isn't its use restricted to governmental bodies and nonprofit organizations (and not available to businesses and nonaffiliated researchers)? As you know Census data is available to all.

If your aim is to get ZIP code data, you won't find it in the ACS. 

You could try ZIP Code Business Patterns (which uses actual ZIP codes, not ZCTAs), but I don't know if that will include all of the SES data you need:
