  • RE: MOEs for derived averages

    Glenn Rice
    Glenn Rice

To possibly answer my own question and ask a new one: Could I use formula (9) to do this?

Calculating Measures of Error for the Product of Two Estimates

Since dividing x / y is the same as the product x * 1/y, could this work?

    EDIT: trying this out.…

I just wrote a blog post on Visualizing ACS Margins of Error in R that I thought might be of interest to this group:

  • Error margins for 5-year ACS estimates

    John Duchneskie
    John Duchneskie

    Hello:

I work for a news organization that wants to write about some of the 5-year ACS demographics, especially poverty and income, for local towns in our area. There are 340 municipalities that we cover. If we look at the main estimates for 2013-17, and…

  • Pre-made table showing migrant country of origin (MIGSP) for a specific destination state?

    gmoored
    gmoored

Hi all - I'm trying to determine countries of origin for international migrants to my state in 2022. Is there a pre-made ACS table that I could find in the data explorer that would show this? I haven't been able to find one, but thought I'd post here…

  • Recent Census Bureau Guidance on Calculating Standard Errors for Derived Estimates

    Linda Jacobsen
    Linda Jacobsen
If you've been using the guidance and formulas in Appendix 3 of the ACS Compass Handbooks to calculate Margins of Error for ACS estimates that you have derived, then you might want to review the updated guidance and formulas that the Census Bureau provided…

  • Reporting Significant Digits and Rounding of Estimates

    Ennazus
    Ennazus

Do you have any recommended practices for rounding and significant digits you could share?

For regional planning, we often have report 1-year ACS values that have a fair amount of uncertainty. Here's an example of this type of reporting: https://www…

  • Derived MOE for Percents when the value is 0 inside the square root

    Laura Daly
    Laura Daly

When calculating derived MOEs for proportions, what is the protocol for when the values inside the square root equal 0? In the examples I’ve found, this is most likely to happen when the numerator and denominator are close to zero and have relatively…

  • Calculating Standard Error of A Median in SAS

    Douglas White
    Douglas White

Working with 2016 ACS PUMS data. Can anyone share how to get the standard error for a median using SAS? For example, if one was looking for the median of gross rent, it's easy enough to multiply grntp by adjhsg and find the median, but how do you calculate…

  • RE: Efficiently create long panel of 1-year estimates

    Jonathan Schroeder
    Jonathan Schroeder

The 1-year estimates are published only for areas with at least 65,000 residents, which excludes most counties (though the included counties, with their larger populations, include a significant majority of the US population).

    Even for larger areas, the…

  • RE: Share of People Living in Metro Areas

    Jonathan Schroeder
    Jonathan Schroeder

Yes, exactly. The ACS collects data all over the place every year, including in small-population counties. It's a complete nationwide sample. Over the course of 5 years, this adds up to a large enough sample to report estimates even for areas with small…
