Discrepancy between Population Totals for Blocks and Tracts

Hello Colleagues,

I downloaded 2020 PL94-171 P1 and P3 data to get the total population in New Mexico by Census Blocks and Census Tracts. The block populations do not add up to the tract populations. I thought this would not be an issue since total population is not a sensitive statistic in terms of privacy. For example, the Block data estimates a pop of 2693 for Tract 1.07, while the Tract data estimates 2247 in total population for the same geography. Any thoughts about this discrepancy?

Thank You,

David

  • I found Census Tract 1.07 in Bernalillo County, New Mexico with a total population of 2693 persons (table P1) and 2247 persons 18 years and older (table P3). Can it be that you are comparing total populations with populations age 18 and over?

Block populations should add up to the tracts in PL94-171.

  • You are correct Jan.

Apparently while trying to find available data, I clicked on the wrong table.

    Thank You for the reply.
