Question about the ESR Variable

Was looking at occupation data from PUMS, and also using the ESR variable.

If ESR=6, you are not in the labor force. I assumed that would mean that you had no OCCP value as well.

That assumption is wrong. Can someone explain why you'd have an OCCP code if you have an ESR value of 6.

    The ACS questionnaire asks about occupation (as well as industry and class of worker) for people who have worked anytime in the five years before they were surveyed. If someone is currently not in the labor force (ESR=6), they're still asked to provide that information for their most recent job they had when they were working.

    The paper questionnaire for 2020 is here: www2.census.gov/.../quest20.pdf. The work questions are on pp. 16-18.
