Hello,
I am trying to explore the data from the ACS on Micronesian populations and had a question about how the data is organized. Under the category of race by Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islanders I see the numbers for Micronesian by breakdown of origin (Chamarro, Marshallese, other). However, is the Micronesian data linked to the other ACS questions? For instance, can I filter by those who are Micronesian and their responses to housing, poverty questions, etc?
Thank you,
Brittany
You would need microdata for that — Ipums.org — get detailed race and then filter by that value.
I believe the sample sizes are much too small for that sort of breakdown. The closest you could get is by Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander. And even that will be limited. Check out the Appendices file (Appendix A) in the Summary File documentation for a list of the tables. I believe the ones that end in E (e.g. B17020E) are for Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander Alone). www.census.gov/.../summary-file-documentation.html
or use PUMS like Tim says! :)
If you use IPUMS the RACE variable does not include Pacific Islander subgroups. Workarounds would be to use the ANCESTR1 and ANCESTR2 variables. Alternatively you could use the BPL variable. You could also combine these by creating a variable to filter for anyone with ancestry and/or birthplace of interest. You might want to take into account RACPACIS to ensure that everyone you put into your group is actually of relevant heritage, rather than say a White or Black person born in the Pacific region.
Right! I wasn’t sure if it was in race or ancestryI should’ve looked first! Thanks Cliff!
Actually there IS some detail in race for Micronesian, but recently only breaking out Chamorro/Guamanian and ‘one or more other’ usa.ipums.org/.../RACE
Hi Brittany,
We release a special data product every five years called the Selected Population Tables for selected race, Hispanic origin, tribal, and ancestry populations. The latest release is the 2011-2015 ACS 5-year SPT. You can learn more about it at https://www.census.gov/programs-surveys/acs/data/race-aian.html. We do have tables for your groups of interest. For example...
Guamanian or Chamorro alone population:
https://data.census.gov/cedsci/all?q=&t=056%20-%20Guamanian%20or%20Chamorro%20alone%20%28520-522%29
Marshallese alone:
https://data.census.gov/cedsci/all?q=&t=096%20-%20Marshallese%20alone%20%28532%29
Hope this helps!
Gretchen
You are right. I neglected to mention RACED, which includes detailed race groups.
